to tackle the big stories of the day. mitt romney released his tax returns for 2011, but if he thinks that this is going to put that issue behind him, he is dead wrong because all that dump does is raise more questions about his tax returns. we still don't know anything about his swiss bank account or his money in the cayman islands in bermuda, in other words he just raised more questions. we'll get into that but let's get the latest from today's current news update here she is lisa ferguson. >> president obama is headed to new york city today where he and the first lady with tape an episode of "the view." mitt romney is in colorado as part of his renewed push for swing state voters. and we will likely hear the same message from him today that we heard him from last night, which is that he is the change americans deserve in washington. also the candidates faced off in a bit of a debate preview. the president owned up to what he says was his biggest disappointment that he has not been able to change the cry mate in washington. >> i'm hoping that when the smoke clears

start with the big one. next weiss' first huge bedate between barack obama and mitt romney. no matter what we say now trying to figure this thing out, it's impossible to know what it will feel like when these two men meet, shake hands, and take their positions. the studio where we do "hardball" in washington was the sight of the second great debate between richard nixon and john f. kennedy. right before that debate the kennedy brothers arrived to discover something weird had happened. the temperature was meat locker level. so cold they couldn't believe it and they knew why. kennedy's television adviser went racing to the basement and found nixon's guy standing watch on the thermostat. nixon had sweated in that first debate and it cost him. this time the nixon people were intent on freezing the room so cold that nixon couldn't sweat at all. well, after a standoff in that basement in our headquarters and some threats to call the police, they agreed to bring the temperature up. well, think this stuff doesn't matter? it all matters. just like everything we do, wear, look like, act like, s

you with us. it's a referendum on taxes but as candidate romney said some months ago down in florida, if 47%, 46% of the households are already paying no taxes, is his message of lower taxes going to resonate with that significant portion of the electorate? >> i actually think that message does resonate. most americans know instinctively higher taxes mean slower growth, fewer jobs. whether you're paying income taxes, everyone has a strong interest in robust economy and a low tax rate is part of that. >> sir, if obama wins re-election, will republicans have to give up on their no tax hike position? >> the question is not really whether they'll give up. no, they don't have to give up. the problem is all the bush tax cuts run out automatically. republicans could vote to extend them unless the president is willing to sign that extension. then they run out. that, by the way, could have happened in 2010. the only reason we were able to avoid it then is the president, i think, wisely decided the economy was too weak and we bargained with him. gave him an extension of unemployment benefits i
